Abstract

This article examines three editions of the collected poetry of Maulana Muhammad Ali jauhar; Abdul Majid Daryabadi (1936), Noor-ur-Rehman's (1962) and Dr. Ali Muhammad Khan's (2012). Since Jauhar never published a definitive collection in his lifetime, each editor faced the task of gathering, arranging, and authenticating his scattered verse. Drawing on the principles of textual editing outlined by scholars such as Gian Chand Jain, Khaliq Anjum and Insar Ullah Nazar. The study evaluates each edition against the stages of the editor's work; collection and verification, textual criticism, annotation and the preface. The comparison shows that Daryabadi gathered the poetry from periodicals and arranged it by radeef, but did not explain this mehtod or document his sources, and poem "Ali Garh College se Rukhsat" is missing from his edition. Noor-ur-Rehman based his text on facsimiles of manuscripts and included what poem with a citation to Makhzn (June 1907), but his arrangement is inconsistent and does not acknowledge his debt to Daryabadi. Dr. Ali Muhammad Khan consolidated both earlier editions, provided a unified arrangement and annotation, and acknowledged his sources, yet he too does not state the criteria used to resolve textual variants. The study concludes that none of the three editions fully meets the editor's responsibilities, and it argues for a new critical edition with a documented mehtod, complete variant readings and full annotation.
