Farhatullah Baig is considered one of the earliest sketch writers in Urdu literature. He played an important role in introducing and developing sketch writing in the Urdu literary tradition. A sketch is an important genre of Urdu prose in which a vivid portrait of a person is drawn through the significant events of his or her life. In this regard, his sketches "Nazir Ahmad Ki Kahani Kuch Meri Aur Kuch Un Ki Zabani" and "Ek Wasiyat Ki Takmeel" demonstrate his mastery of the art of sketch writing. In these sketches, he has portrayed the personal lives and literary achievements of the renowned Urdu figures Deputy Nazir Ahmad and Maulvi Wahiduddin Saleem with such skill that a complete picture of their personalities emerges before the reader's eyes. This article presents a critical review of these sketches.
